Oxytetracycline vet. broad spectrum antibiotic

Indications
Oxytetracycline is indicated in infection where broad spectrum activity is required and in case of infections with organisms sensitive to it: - Enteric infections due to E. coli, Salmonella. - Respiratory infections due to Mycoplasma spp., Pasteurella spp., especially in cattle - Anaplasmosis due to protozoa Anaplasma marginade occur in cattle and related ruminants. - Theileriosis : due to theileria parva occur in cattle.

Warning & Precautions
Used cautiously in renal or hepatic impairment. - Avoid subcutaneous injection in horses. - Used cautiously in horses exposed to stress or surgery. - This product should not be diluted with solution of calcium salt as this will cause precipitation. - Meat produced by animal treated with tetracycline should not be used for human consumption before elapse of 21 days from last injection.

Dosage
Animals treated: Cattle, sheep, goats, horses, foals, lambs. For active ingredient: (5-10) mg/kg daily for 3-5 days. For whole product: Oxytetracycline 5%: (0.1-0.2) ml/kg daily for 3-5 days. The dose should be given in two equally divided doses at 12 hr. intervals. Route of administration: Intramuscular or subcutaneous. Withdrawal period: For meat 21 days.

Adverse Reactions
Photodermatitis may be observed after treatment with Oxytetracycline after exposure to intense sunlight or ultraviolet light.

Contra Indications
- Late pregnancy. - Neonates up to 4 weeks. - Not used for animals producing milk for human consumption.

Drug Interactions
- Milk and milk byproducts , antacid , kaolin and iron preparation decrease the absorption of Oxytetracycline from GI tract . - The presence of food can substantially delay the absorption of Oxytetracycline from GI tract . - The Oxytetracycline are less active in alkaline urine , and urine acidification can increase their antibacterial efficacy . - Oxytetracycline gradually loses activity when dilute in infusion fluids and exposed to ultraviolet light . - It also binds to the calcium ions in Ringer's solution . - Methoxyflurane anesthesia combined with oxytetracycline therapy may be nephrotoxic .

Adverse Reactions
-The product is not for horses. -Oral administration in ruminant may cause indigestion and diarrhea during the first few days -Discoloration of teeth in young animals. -Long term therapy may result in overgrowth (super infections) of non susceptible bacteria or fungi. -It is associated with photo sensitivity reactions and rarely hepatotoxicity, blood dyscrasias.
 
Contra Indications
-Contraindicated for horse owing to fatal enteritis -Oxytetracycline is contraindicated in animals with hypersensitivity to it. -Because it can retard fetal skeletal development they should only be used in last half of pregnancy. -When the benefits out weigh the fetal risk
